| ❓ | Inconclusive | No fair judgement can be made, for example because the sample has been tainted |
| ❌ | Bad | Poor overall quality, has significant flaws, or greatly underperforms for its category |
| ➖ | Unfulfilling | Not without any merit, but given the many superior alternatives there’s little reason for an enthusiast to bother. This is what I expect of most commercialized single malts and blends, and single cask bottlings that did not work out too well. |
| ✔️ | Rewarding | Rewards a focussed and mindful engagement. Shortcomings, if present, are either forgivable or rather a matter of preference. This is the level I expect of official single malts with a focus on quality over marketing, and of most single casks offerings from reputable independent bottlers. |
| ❤️ | Personal favourite | This spirit really connects with me. The hunt for these special drams is what the hobby is all about. |
The marks themselves do not explicitly take price, availability, hype, or other context into account (although the experience itself is necessarily coloured by relative expectation). I therefore sometimes add an additional qualification:
| ⭐ | Special distinction | Deserving of particular attention, for example because • particularly fine representative of a certain style • exceptional value for money • marks a special occasion on my whisky journey |
