Kleinlish

Kleinlish” is what I say for “I’ll have a little Clynelish tonight”.

Tasting notes from a 2cl sample bottle

Nosing

Very chalky, and mineral, with grape fruit, pineapple, rose hip, flowers; a little perfumy.

Sipping

Not really sweet, slight oaky and herbal bitterness. Lots of stone fruits, squeeze of citrus, some dry grass and flowers, and chalky minerality. Spicy finishes, some white pepper. There’s a robust spirit-driven character underneath.

I feel it would gain a lot from a bump to 50%. But I really like this floral, mineral, and restrained style. Feels rare these days. And this was less than €50 back in 2016!

Tasting notes from a 5cl sample bottle

Nosing

Wow, that actually smells like crayons. Then citric, with mostly unripe fruits (green tomatoes, mango) but also sweeter pear and grapes, and cocoa nibs. Again, quite minerally.

Sipping

Very robust and meaty. On the dry side, with quite some herbal bitterness. I would still say a honied flavour, though its not very sweet, some and some smoke.

There’s a very clear distillery character with a lot of overlap between the 1996 and the 2009.

Not as complex (and well-aged) but the experience very much reminds me of Brora! I’d buy at €120, but likely not to be seen much below €200.

Lots of green bars; indeed, an overall very enjoyable range of Clynelishes. None was at the apex of what one can find from the distillery, but they were all really good.
